Better Security, Better Care is a national and local support programme to help adult social care providers to store and share information safely. It covers paper and digital records and focuses on helping care providers to complete the Data Security and Protection Toolkit – the annual, online self-assessment.

As a care provider, the programme will help you to evaluate and improve your data and cyber security. This means you can reassure the people you support and their families, your staff, commissioners, regulators, and health and care partners, that you are following good practice – and meeting legal and regulatory requirements.

You do not have to be a data or digital expert to get support. The programme can support you – wherever you are on your data security journey.

In person data security and protection training materials

The course has been developed by the Better Security, Better Care programme to help care providers to meet the annual training requirements of the Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT). The DSPT requires at least 95% of care staff to have completed data protection training within the last 12 months, and to have achieved at least 80% in an assessment.

These free training materials have been developed from the Data Security and Protection eLearning course that was designed and tested with care providers and has been well received by the sector. Acknowledging that eLearning does not work for everyone, these materials support care provider organisations to train their staff in data security and protection in a face-to-face setting.

NEW: Free eLearning for Data Protection Leads in Social Care

Digital Care Hub is excited to announce the launch of its new, free eLearning course for Data Protection Leads in social care organisations. Tailored for small to medium-sized care providers in England, this course is designed to help those responsible for data security and protection enhance their skills and meet the requirements of the Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT).

The course is perfect for those looking to improve their knowledge of data protection, cyber security, and compliance, supporting both professional development and organisational security. The modules cover a range of important topics and are built with real-world scenarios that reflect the challenges faced by care homes, supported living, home care, and community services.

The modules are:

Module 1: Data protection rights and responsibilities

Module 2: Keeping data secure

Module 3: Threats to data security

Module 4: Data breaches

Each module takes 15-20 minutes to complete, and participants can work through the entire course or select individual modules based on their needs. Upon completion of Module 4, participants will receive a certificate for Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
